A King's daughter once vowed to marry no one who would not promise to be buried with her if she died. This curious vow had frightened away all suitors: all but one, a young soldier in the service of the King. The King was carrying on a war; the youth therefore joined the army on campaign. And when they came before the enemy, and a battle took place, the fighting grew quickly to heated intensity, and it rained bullets so thickly that his new friends fell quickly around him on all sides...

This episode tells the story of The Three Snake Leaves from the tales collected by the Brothers Grimm. It is classified as type 612 in the Aarne-Thompson index of tale types, of which it is the original archetype.

At the heart of the tale is a magical herb or pharmakon, the three snake leaves, which have the power of restoring someone to life, discovered when the protagonist observes the strange behaviour of a pair of snakes. It appears to have its origins in Greek myth, where the story was told alternatively about the Greek seer Polyidus or the divine Asclepius, and how they resurrected Glaucus, the son of Minos, a story which we told in Season 2 of Lore & Legend in Episode 4 - The Healer's Dream. Tales of the power of snakes and their venom to bring both life and death appear elsewhere in world mythology and culture, and you can learn more by checking out The Healer's Dream and its accompanying blog post.

As is often the case in myth and literature escaping the power of death proves to have dire consequences. Many stories warn against the impossibility of this feat by emphasizing the life that follows as unnatural, in tales about decomposing bodies and inhuman appetites—of zombies, vampires and unquiet ghosts. In the Three Snake Leaves the flaw lies not in the body but the heart: our protagonist is able to revive his lover, but not her love, to his pain and later mortal peril. The tragic arc of the tale is complete when the hero undergoes the same transformation as his wife: he, too, is saved from death, but returns with a heart as cold as the grave.
