THE BINDING OF CASSANDRA
SERIES II · PROLOGUE II
She was in the Temple when she heard the voice. Kneeling in the glow of the holy fires that lit the adyta, the sanctum, sweat glistening upon her brow, the curls of her hair damp on her cheeks from her exertion. Before the image of Apollo, the Son of Zeus, whose eyes reflected the altar fires like burnished bronze, exhausted from her worship, she had subsided into the stream of sleep.
As she sleeps, the snakes of Apollo unwind their long and sinuous bodies; they they bend their heads to her ears, and with flickering tongues, they lick at her white lobes...
The Binding of Cassandra is the second of four 'mini-episodes' or prologues to our second season of Lore & Legend, which focuses on Greek mythology. They allow us to tell some stories and pieces of lore from the setting which are rich, dramatic and exciting, but weren't big enough to spin a full episode from. This second episode tells the story of the Princess Cassandra, a Trojan preistess of Apollo famed for possessing an extraordinary gift of prophecy, but cursed never to be believed.
According to the legends, Apollo promised to give Cassandra the gift of prophecy in return for sleeping with her, but Cassandra rejected his advances or changed her mind. In response, Apollo cursed Cassandra never to be believed by anybody, and her prophecies and trances were interpreted as madness. On the order of her father King Priam, she was confined in a pyramid on the citadel in Troy under the care of a wardress who reported teh content of her prophetic utterences to the King. Further legends state that Cassandra instructed her brother Helenus in the arts of prophecy, but when he prophesied in the manner of his sister, he was always believed.
